When Rolling Stone last interviewed Ke$ha — whose “TiK ToK” has been on a glittery, record-breaking run on the Singles chart — the 22-year-old pop star admitted she’s not afraid to look like an asshole, she admires the Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire, and her dream collaboration is a slumber party with Beck and Prince. When she stopped by the RS offices last week, we wanted to ask her the hard questions — like did she actually deface the Hollywood sign and does she really think she’s like Bob Dylan? — so we found the only journalist truly up to the task: Ke$ha.
Click above to watch Ke$ha going head to head with Ke$ha on her favorite Dylan LP, her love of the Beastie Boys (”We share a similar spirit in that we don’t take it so seriously”), what fans can expect from her upcoming tour (lasers, condoms, glitter — “It’s like a dance party and I’m the dance commander”) and why the highlight of her life so far was meeting Alice Cooper backstage Grammy weekend.
Pop music always has room for another unruly badass who runs her mouth. L.A.-based Ke$ha may have been on your radar prior to her current radio smash “Tik Tok” as the voice on Flo Rida’s #1 track “Right Round,” on which she was credited internationally but not in the U.S.
The 22-year-old writes all her own music – she’s kind of obsessed with it – and even broke into Prince’s Beverly Hills home once. Her essence is really that of the anti-pop star. It’s easy to compare her sound with Lady Gaga’s musical style, but you can’t discount her outspokenness and lyrical savvy that comes off as one part Pink, another part Beastie Boy. Her material is the pop star equivalent of Kathy Griffin or Mo’Nique, with enough raunchiness to parallel a slew of Howard Stern shows.
“I’m not a brain surgeon, it’s pop music,” she says. “I don’t take myself too seriously – it’s supposed to be a fun ride.”
Adam Lambert doesn’t like it when you talk on the phone during his concerts. (…)
Needless to say, when we spotted him at G-Star Raw Tuesday night, the incident came up. (…)
However, Adam was a bit more forthcoming with us reporters when talking about some slightly less current affairs. Things like…
What must you always have with you?
I don’t leave home without my music—my iPod—because, while I’m getting ready, if I don’t have the music, I get real stressed-the-heck out…Ke$ha’s CD is really fantastic for getting ready. Always Goldfrapp. Always, always, always. Mike Snow is a great album to get ready to. (…)
I’ve just added some gorgeous high quality scans of the new Bravo issue that came out in Germany today, February 17, 2010, including a brand new article and a fab exclusive photoshoot! Thanks so much to Max @twitter for these and make sure you view them now at our gallery.
You can finally watch the video of Ke$ha at German TV showMTV Home on February 5, 2010. She looks super gorgeous and it’s a nice interview so make sure you watch it now on the player below!
Ke$ha’s not even nominated for an award – this year – but she’s dropped in on the BRIT Awards to see, amongst others, Florence and The Machine.
Check out Rich and Kat’s BRITs studio, which comes complete with on tap champagne and more sweets than Woolworths. (Before they went bustm, which we’re still upset about to be honest.)
Despite 30-degree weather last night, Ke$ha showed up to Erin Wasson’s RVCA show wearing only a leopard-print leotard, fishnets, and a spiky leather biker jacket. She had just done a photo shoot for Elle, and arrived with the magazine’s creative director, Joe Zee, who styled her for the evening and thought no pants was a great look for the day after a snowstorm. “I have no ass, but I have pretty cool legs so I might as well just let it out,” Ke$ha told us. Her face was covered in glitter. “Hell yeah! Glitter is everything. Glitter and hair and hairspray,” she said. “I’m obsessed — I’m like, a glitter connoisseur. I buy it by the pound. I have like, secret sources of glitter. And then the only thing I’m a diva about on tour is like — I need at least a gallon of glitter a night.”
(…) Ke$ha has a less positive outlook on the day. “Blah!” she said, reiterating Garner’s girls-only plans. “Go out with your girlfriends. Blah — that’s all I have to say about Valentine’s Day. Happy Valentine’s Day! Whatever!” (…)
Now is definitely Ke$ha’s moment. Her party anthem ‘Tik Tok’ sold more downloads in a single week than any female artist in history, hitting number one in five countries. Her album ‘Animal’ debuted atop the US Billboard chart. And she’s already got a notorious backstory that would make Madonna jealous.
Kesha Rose Sebert grew up in Nashville as the daughter of songwriter and single mom Pebe Sebert — who wrote Dolly Parton’s ‘Old Flames Can’t Hold A Candle To You.’ She appeared on ‘The Simple Life’ (Paris and Nicole tried to set her mom up on a date) and later went to a party at Paris Hilton’s house and threw up in her closet.
She once snuck into Prince’s home — and made it up to the third floor where he was jamming with his band before being escorted out by security. Many have pegged her as the inheritor of Lady Gaga’s crazy-pop throne (as if Ms. Gaga’s going to be abdicating anytime soon).
But would it surprise you to learn that Bob Dylan’s ‘Nashville Skyline’ is one of her favorite albums of all time? She may be a bonafide pop tart, but Ke$ha is no cliché.
Ke$ha makes no apologies for her brash personality, which she’s managed to channel into catchy, raucous party songs. And with her first single “Tik Tok” still pumping loudly from stereos, it’s time for Ke$ha to assault radio airwaves with her new single, “Blah Blah Blah,” off her chart-topping debut album, Animal.
The up-and-comer recently shot a video for the song along with the boys of 3Oh!3, who appear on the bratty club anthem. “The whole concept of the video was a bunch of douche-y guys macking on me as usual, and me making them eat their toupees or other various items,” she told MTV News at the shoot. “At one point, I get to be strapped to this harness and bouncing around everywhere, and it was really cool.”
In the song, Ke$ha ridicules a would-be suitor for “ta-ta-talking that bla-bla-bla” when all she really wants is to have sex with him.
Ke$ha explained that the dance tune originated from a discussion she had in the studio on the politics of female-male relationships. “The song came about when the people that wrote it — me, Benny Blanco, Neon Hitch and [3Oh!3's] Sean Foreman — all got in a room, and they were talking about how chicks talk too much,” she said.
“And me and Neon were like, ‘No, no, no, guys talk too much,’ ” she continued. “So, we had this war of who were more obnoxious, chicks or dudes. And the song kind of came around from that conversation. I think I make a pretty fair point both in this video and in the song, that dudes are way more annoying.”
