KE$HA: Like many L.A. musicians, the singer Ke$ha survived her lean early years in the city by snacking on the free food offered during happy hour at Echo Park’s myriad dive bars. But the singer’s situation was rather different than many of her struggling peers. She was scavenging at the same time her voice was all over the radio — she sang the chorus hook of Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” one of the biggest pop singles of 2009.

“We were both working with (producer) Dr. Luke and it was an accident I was even on it,” said the young San Fernando Valley native, born Kesha Sebert. “I never made any money off it, that’s why I put the dollar sign in my name as a joke. But I was happy being in that bar with two dollars in change wearing clothes I found in the garbage surrounded by people who love me.”

ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK: A new decade brings a new No. 1 to the Billboard Hot 100, as rookie Ke$ha rises 2-1 with “TiK Tok.”

The 22-year-old, born Kesha Rose Sebert, is the first solo female to ascend to the summit with a maiden chart entry since Lady Gaga, who led with “Just Dance,” the first new No. 1 of 2009.

(Ke$ha is not credited on Flo Rida’s 2009 No. 1 “Right Round,” although she sang on the song’s chorus).

“TiK ToK,” a zippy and salacious celebration of late nights and mornings-after by a new artist named Ke$ha, has spent the last few weeks zooming toward the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Along with “Rapture,” the 1981 hit by Blondie, it’s one of the most successful white-girl rap songs of all time.

Actually, that depends on who you ask.

“TiK ToK” is sung in the chorus and rapped in the verses, enhanced by Auto-Tune in a few places, in keeping with its electro-pop production. There are even a couple of ad-libs by Diddy, and a line that appears to be borrowed from Jermaine Dupri.

“I’ve done the country, done the pop-rock, done the super-hard electro,” Ke$ha (pronounced KESH-uh) said this month, taking a breather in a Midtown Manhattan hotel between performances for the pop radio station Z100. “I was like, whatever, throw some rap in there, why not?” Slouched deep in a cushioned chair, she was dressed like a hippie pirate, with matted dirty blond hair and black makeup streaming from her right eye in precise darts.

This album is fierce. Ke$ha’s debut ‘Animal‘ shows that although the sound is glittery electro-pop, the lyrics are far from dainty: “I don’t care where you live at, just turn around boy and let me hit that / Don’t be a little b—- with your chit chat, just show me where your d—- at.” And this is just one of her songs (specifically ‘Blah Blah Blah‘ featuring 3OH!3) off her 13-track album dropping Jan. 5. The 22-year-old Nashville-raised singer — who has written for Miley and the Veronicas — got her breakthrough on Flo Rida’s ‘Right Round’ and now has a the charting single ‘Tik Tok,’ which muses about the singer’s crazy night out partying. With other notable songs heavy on auto-synth beats: ‘Take It Off,’ (reminiscent of a six-grade camp ditty, and you’ll know what I mean when you hear it), ‘Kiss N Tell‘ and bubblegum ‘Your Love is My Drug,’ the singer is backed by music producer Dr. Luke (who had previously worked with Britney Spears). Slowly but sure, Ke$ha climbs to the second position on the U.S. singles chart with one of the ‘Animal’ tracks, ‘Tik Tok’.

Ke$ha made her break when lending her vocal to Flo Rida’s chart-topping single “Right Round” in January. However, the singer who has written songs for the likes of Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears turned down the offer to appear in the video. “I want to make my own name for myself,” she told Esquire.

Indeed, Ke$ha has succeeded making a name through her own music. Her solo debut single “Tik Tok” is currently securing No. 2 spot on Billboard Hot 100, sitting behind Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ duet track “Empire State of Mind” and overshadowing Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance”.

“Tik Tok” is a lead single from her first studio album “Animal” which is slated for January 5, 2010 U.S. release. Beside busting the chart, the song was also heard on the small screen. It was used to promote “Project Runway” season 6, “The Hills” and 2009 reboot of “Melrose Place”.

Recently, Ke$ha told MTV that one of the songs in the forthcoming album talked about a guy she was once interested in. “I wrote about this guy that I’ve been stalking since I was, like, 15, but he’s a total loser, so I don’t want to glorify him in any way,” she said. “But I’m really excited for the song.”

Sharing something in common with Taylor Swift who also isn’t shy to pen a song for her ex-boyfriend, Ke$ha declared her love for the country music singer when she was presented with Taylor’s name. “I would totally collaborate with her,” she gushed. “But I think I would scare her, to be honest. … But yeah, I really love, love the way she writes, because you can tell it’s real and you can tell it’s honest, so I do think there’s that similarity in our writing styles. You can tell she’s talking about a very specific situation, and you know it’s real.”

The hottest new pop star to emerge from the States since Lady Gaga risked a spell in jail because of a desperate bid to find fame.

Tik Tok singer Ke$ha, whose real name is Kesha Rose Sebert, broke into Prince’s home in the hope that he would listen to a demo of her songs.

Fortunately for her, the surprised Purple Rain star was so impressed by her determination that he didn’t only take the tape but also decided not to call the cops.

Ke$ha, 22, admitted: “I did actually crawl under a fence to get into Prince’s house.

“I paid the gardener five bucks to help me make it to the other side.

“Then I went waltzing up the purple driveway and found the door was unlocked.

“I got inside and totally freaked out, because there was Prince playing guitar in the other room.

In 2009, we killed Auto-Tune, we partied in the U.S.A., and we howled “Awooo!” at the moon (en español, no less). And those were some of the more normal moments of the year: Seriously, there is no way to sum up a year that had so many bizarre and scandalous moments, so let’s have the songs do it for us.

These are my picks for the Best Songs of 2009: odes to abstinence and combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bells, songs of sadness and beauty, tunes about getting loaded and getting revenge. They’re all important in some way, and they all helped guide us through the tumultuous past 12 months. But that’s enough from me, let’s get to the songs …
