In the eight months since her first single, “Tik Tok,” grabbed hold of the Billboard charts, singer Ke$ha (real name: Kesha Rose Sebert) has gotten a lot of compliments. “This bum in L.A. told me I looked like Robert Plant,” she says. “That was the ultimate.” It’s been a pretty supreme year in general for the 23-year-old Nashville native, whose debut, Animal, has sold over 400,000 copies. But like a true Cinderella story, Ke$ha’s success only came after half a decade of toiling in odd jobs throughout Los Angeles. Though her demos got the attention of überproducer Dr. Luke back in 2006, it wasn’t until 2009 that she was formally signed to a label. “Two years ago, I was broke, and my bike had just gotten stolen,” she says. Animal, like the artist herself, is a mashup of punk snarl and party splash topped with a thick lacquer of sparkle. “I leave a trail of glitter behind me—like Hansel and Gretel,” she says proudly. “Any guy I make out with has glitter on his face for at least three days.”

If you’re a “really” hot, tall, bearded, funny and fat Australian bloke who can shoot a bow and arrow, brattish American pop star Ke$ha wants to marry you for citizenship.
However, if you take her lyrics seriously – especially the line in her debut hit Tik Tok about brushing her teeth with whiskey – you aren’t the man for her.
The latest naughty pop girl on the block has the usual suspects frothing with politically correct indignation about her chart-topping tunes, including another salacious single Blah Blah Blah, reports music editor Kathy McCabe.
Like Lily Allen, Katy Perry and The Veronicas, Ke$ha, 23, insists her songs reflect her “sarcastic, sassy and funny” personality rather than being an attempt to stir controversy.
“A fun party record like Tik Tok isn’t something to be dissected and picked apart,” she said in Sydney yesterday. “Men have been doing this for years. One of my biggest influences is Beastie Boys’ Licensed To Ill album.“

| T4 is just like school – that naughty Miquita’s been suspended for being rude about Kesha |

It was only a matter of time before Miquita Oliver’s obnoxious gobbiness caught up with her (pot, kettle, gobby?) – she’s been suspended from T4 over a bust-up with Kesha (still no energy for that dollar sign, soz) at the NME Awards.
Apparently Miquita called Kesha a naughty four letter word (must have been something really rude like “poop”), and the singer’s management overheard. Uh-oh.
“Miquita was having a really bad day,” says someone we’re well jelz of, because they overheard the whole thing. “She and Kesha had a difference of artistic opinion, shall we say, and there was a bit of a misunderstanding. Miquita blurted out the angry words and thought no-one had heard. She didn’t mean anything personally – it was a spur of the moment thing. But Kesha’s team caught what she had said and were outraged. They complained to Miquita’s bosses and they dealt with her straight away. She was given a serious telling off, and told to take some time off.”

I smell another one-hit wonder fast approaching, faster than a Laidlaw flatbed barrelling down a highway with no brakes. The sad part is that I have seen this before, and all too recently. Can someone say Mandy Moore without the acting career? Or even, her urban cohort, Lumidee, sans the pitchy tonality and street credibility?
What we are looking at here is the fact that people is like to watch an accident in progress. Not rare enough to hold our undivided attention, but so potentially damaging to a career that we need not turn away–not even for a moment. The chance of Ke$ha eclipsing her monster hit “TikTok” is less likely than the Obama Administration passing its Health Care Reform with only Democratic votes. And as everyone knows it’s the sophomore single that cements one position in music.

It takes Kesha about five mintues to start talking about boys. Seriously, she’s mid-sentence when her gaze pans off to the right. “What is that…thing?” she asks, peering out the window. It’s not an object or even an animal out on the sidewalk. It’s a human being, a young male specimen, hair tousled, clad in slim black pants and jacket, with a tailored shirt open at the chest. Probably European, definitely sexy. “I’d like to take a bite out of that,” Kesha says, narrowing her glitter-spangled eyes on her prey.
We’re actually here, at a cafe in New York City, to talk about Kesha’s new album, Animal. It’s number one, it’s breaking records, it’s making her a Lady Gaga-level star, blah blah blah. That stuff is clearly secondary to her well-honed interest in hot male ass. And when you think about it, the record itself, led off by the stupidly catchy smash single “Tik Tok,” is mostly about men and the pursuit thereof. Also: booze.

Party girl, crank or professional provocateur, the 23-year-old from Nashville twinkles with laughter and passion for life.
There are as many ways of taking Kesha Sebert in conversation as there are of listening to her debut album, Animal. You can skim the froth off the surface and — as a number of notably irate and mostly male reviewers have done — dismiss the 23-year-old from Nashville, and her songs, as lightweight, or calculating, or crude, or bonkers. Many would contend that that last description would apply to the moment, late in our encounter, where she launches into a long riff about positive thinking and reincarnation. “I’m into energy,” she twinkles. “I recently went to see a past-life regressionist, who is also a psychic. I wear my placenta around my neck every day, because it’s supposed to give you second sight. I feel like I’ve had many lifetimes before.” You can view her whole shtick — the provocative videos, the co-opted dollar sign that renders her professional name as Ke$ha, the tales of throwing up in Paris Hilton’s wardrobe and breaking into Prince’s mansion — as Gaga-like attention-seeking, as the antics of someone who is more victim than victor in the cauldron of celebrity culture. Or you can listen, without prejudice, to the case she makes for herself, to the brutally attitudinal or self-aware lyrics, to the outrageously weird, ADHD-frenzied sonic inventiveness of Animal, and conclude that, when it comes to chart pop in 2010, Sebert is right at the front of the pack.

It was the day after Christmas, and we were dancing at 12th & Porter while Ke$ha danced barely three feet away. She already had the No. 2 song in the country, but she wouldn’t be a global it-girl for at least another week. Had we known that, a month later, we’d be fighting with Rolling Stone and most of the European Union to land an interview, we would have just violated the first rule of the Nashville Celebrity-Industrial Complex to cut in.
But at that point, Ke$ha — born Kesha Rose Sebert — was still just a girl from Brentwood who’d moved to L.A. to make pop records. Tons of artists head to the Left Coast to make music with big-name producers every year, but rarely do those albums see the light of day, never mind launch a single like “TiK ToK” — the hook-laden, bawdy dance-pop monster that recently sucker punched Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life” for the longest run of consecutive weeks on top of Billboard’s Hot 100 charts. Not that we weren’t pulling for the sassy 23-year-old, but that sort of success is rare, and even rarer among people who’ve allegedly made out with not one, but two members of our Monday-night trivia team.

Pop wild child Ke$ha has revealed how she tried tracking down her father – only to be left down and out in Los Angeles.
America’s hottest new rock chick has never met her dad and gave up any interest in finding him after a trip to the City of Angels proved to be a dead end.
Ke$ha – who has been at No1 in the US since the new year with Tik Tok – insists she wouldn’t be too thrilled if he turned up out of the blue. The 23-year-old said: “I made my way out to LA and stayed with this guy I thought could be my dad, but he’s not.
“At least I don’t think he is. There is a slim chance he is my father. I got off the airplane to meet him and immediately I was like, no way.”
