Pop Smart: How Ke$ha tik-tokked her way to the top.
“I’m lying in bed naked,” whispers Kesha over the phone. Though it’s an intriguing image, she manages to come off less like a Mariah Carey-style sex kitten and more in the vein of a Jack Black-type, rubbing his nipples and licking his lips. When someone chooses to change the “s” in her name to a dollar sign, it’s really hard to take much that she does thereafter seriously. Imagine if Joanna New$om or Regina $pektor had made that little alteration. Fortunately, the oft glittered and feathered 23-year-old Kesha Sebert, whose irreverent party anthem “Tik Tok” has been inescapable over the course of 2010, is in on the joke. “I’m writing songs about brushing my teeth with Jack Daniels. It doesn’t have to be so serious all the time — especially with pop music. I don’t take myself very seriously. I don’t think I should or could,” she explains from her hotel room in New York City, which incidentally has “very nice sheets.”

Ke$ha: Here for the party

Dismiss her as lightweight if you want, but the undeniable pop sensation worked hard to get here — just ask her.
With her rather trashy esthetic — cowboy boots, big hair, smudged makeup, nose hoop — and anecdotes about throwing up in Paris Hilton’s closet and sending gift-wrapped poop to enemies, singer-rapper Ke$ha is easy to dismiss as a lightweight who got lucky with the handful of infectious electro pop tunes that catapulted her into the spotlight.
Not high fashion like Rihanna, outrageous as Lady Gaga, or clever as Katy Perry, the Nashville-based, L.A.-born performer has remained competitive on the strength of her January debut, Animal, which has scored three top ten singles, “Blah Blah Blah,” “Your Love is My Drug” and the ubiquitous “Tik Tok,” which spent nine weeks atop Billboard’s Hot 100 chart to become the longest running No. 1 debut single by a female artist since Debby Boone’s 1977 “You Light Up My Life.”

Since her album debuted at No. 1 in January, pop superstar and Nashville resident Ke$ha has spent much of this year basking in global fame. But tonight, she gets to put the focus back on rebuilding her hometown. She’s headlining her own Nashville flood relief concert at Limelight Nashville tonight, with 100 percent of profits going to help flood victims.
“I’m really in the position finally to help in a big way, which is to me one of the biggest upsides of the whole fame thing,” Ke$ha told The Tennessean Tuesday afternoon.
“Really, the only part of celebrity culture I take seriously is the fact that I am going to get to reach a lot of people about something this serious, that a lot of people need to be aware of.”

Ke$ha’s ‘Your Love Is My Drug’ Video: Beards, Boulders, Beatles And Bodypaint

You can accuse Ke$ha of being many things (and after her divisive performance on “Saturday Night Live,” last month, many people have), but you cannot say that she’s not honest.
In recent weeks, she’s told us that her brand-new video for “Your Love Is My Drug” would be set in a desert, would feature plenty of animals, at least one bearded dude, an extended, body-paint enhanced dance sequence in a cave, and animation inspired by the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” film. And now that the video has premiered … well, she wasn’t lying.

Ke$ha can’t be tamed, and the wild child-turned-pop singer makes it clear in the video for her latest single, “Your Love Is My Drug.”
In the clip, Ke$ha wakes up in the desert after a surely ‘shroom-fueled romp with her man and goes psychedelic on us. She rides an elephant and prowls in the sand with a tiger’s head, then steers a canoe to nowhere with her boy toy (the couple’s boho style is inspired by Kate Hudson and the Black Crowes‘ Chris Robinson, no doubt). Cartoon crabs, ocotpi and mermaids soon take over the screen, in a clear nod to the Beatles’ tripped-out classic, “Yellow Submarine.”
And then, the climax: the tribal, glow-in-the-dark body paint that we first saw Ke$ha rock on “SNL” is back, and she’s got a giant snake wrapped around her body for added measure.
Are you high on Ke$ha’s “Drug” supply, or is it a downer? Let us know in the comments.

Music City to Rebuild on Shoulders of Its Stars

Nashville may be the country music capital of the world, but at a time when its struggling to rebuild from devastating floods, its billing as Music City has never been as fitting.
Recording artists from all genres who call Nashville home are responding to the disaster.
Pop star Ke$ha flew in from New York early last week and saw the damage before her plane touched down.
“I looked outside and I saw lakes, except for in the middle of the lake there would be a roof. I was a little confused,” she said in a phone interview.

Given that Ke$ha once described her sartorial taste as “garbage chic,” it’s hardly surprising that her unique fashion sense took center stage during her musical-guest debut on this week’s “Saturday Night Live,” hosted by Ryan Phillippe.
Earlier in the week, when MTV News caught up with the “Tik Tok” singer during rehearsals, she was reluctant to reveal her wardrobe choices for the show. “All I have to say is that it might be really awesome,” she teased. “Actually, I’m pretty sure it is.”
While awesome may be up for interpretation, Ke$ha’s two costume changes certainly were eye-catching. For her first performance, the hit single “Tik Tok,” the 23-year-old took to the Studio 8H stage clad in a black metallic jumpsuit worthy of a space-age superhero (cape included!). During the a cappella opening, Ke$ha took her place behind an American flag-festooned mic, spreading her cape to reveal its own flag-patterned lining. Her backup dancer and accompanists were dressed like astronauts in shiny silver jumpsuits and helmets. Towards the end of the performance, Ke$ha strode to the front of the stage, placing her palms above streams of green lasers shooting up from the stage, as she wondered aloud, “Did anyone ever stop to think we were the aliens?”

Ke$ha doesn’t just speak in italics, with the emphasis always hers—she lives her life that way. Born Kesha Rose Sebert in California’s San Fernando Valley, the 23-year-old singer first earned notice last year as the hook girl on rapper Flo Rida’s hit “Right Round.” But she exploded in her own right with her debut solo single, the postmodern electro-pop time bomb “TiK ToK,” which became the first monster song of the new decade, reaching the top of the charts in nine countries. In fact, not even Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie’s remake of “We Are the World,” which debuted at number two, could overtake “TiK ToK”—quite an accomplishment for a song in which the narrator opines about brushing her teeth “with a bottle of Jack” and “boys trying to touch my junk.”
