Q&A: Hipster hottie Ke$ha dishes on Prince & Paris

Ke$ha—the pride of L.A.’s Eastside hipster axis (when she’s not on tour, find her at La Cita, The Echo, the Gold Room and Cha Cha Lounge)—has totally blown up.

The Valley-born, Nashville-reared performer’s party-starting “TiK ToK” recently crested Billboard’s Top 100 list, and became the most-downloaded-in-a-week single by a female singer in U.S. history. Her first album, Animal, just dropped in January, and now (à la BFF Katy Perry before her) she’s shaping up to be the city’s next big pop breakout.

Q&A with Ke$ha

Randomly, Paris Hilton once stayed with your family on an episode of The Simple Life. You later sang back-up on her album. She must have taken a serious liking to you.
Actually, no, we weren’t friends at all. I was poor and living in L.A. when I was coincidentally offered the gig for $1,000. So I took the money, did the work and eventually vomited in her closet at the release party at her house.

Dang. Did you manage to taint anything important, like her shoes or the Chihuahua?
I don’t know—I employed the puke-‘n’-peace-out strategy and immediately snuck out the back door.

Speaking of unwanted guests, you also snuck into Prince’s Bev Hills pad a little while back, when you were still a complete unknown, to drop off a demo. You got kicked out and he never called back. Think he’ll give you the time of day now?
I’m hoping he hears about me, and when he does, he’s either going to think I’m crazy and try to sue me or he’ll produce my music.

Can you explain that album title?
I think everyone is an animal at the core, but we’re all so distracted by these crazy gadgets that we lose connection with other people, with the Earth.

Um, OK… So, what kind of animal are you?
A vegetarian one.
