Widely maligned as a trashy, auto-tuned version of today’s pop star, last night in Adelaide Ke$ha silenced her critics.
The American singer performed at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre to an all-ages screaming crowd which was left breathless by her commanding stage presence.
Opening her set aloft a platform that was framed as if to look like a dilapadated neon billboard the Tik Tok singer launched into her set seemingly manning DJ decks and even taking up the guitar on occasion.
Despite singing to a backing track, 24 year old Ke$ha was instantly engaging encouraging the crowd to scream on cue – in the vein of Lady Gaga in her past two Adelaide visits – and parading about in a glittering bodysuit.
For those fans who had seen her perform at Monday’s Future Music Festival in Adelaide, last night’s polished and performance-heavy set was a complete departure from her previous efforts.

Ke$ha – the Beatweek interview: America’s favorite party girl gets Sleazy

“People always think I’m a party girl and that sometimes has a negative connotation,” muses Kesha Sebert, her first name more recognizable when there’s a dollar sign in the middle of it. “But really, the party for me is not about being fucked up. It’s about enjoying life.”
Even as Ke$ha spends her second year of fame touring the world and releasing a remix EP appropriately titled I Am The Dance Commander + I Command You To Dance, the mainstream pop star who managed to initially catapult her career with a guest vocal spot on a hip hop track back in 2009 is opting to do things her way in 2011. Plans for her sold out headlining tour are as weird as she wants them to be. “In my live show I perform a human sacrifice ritual every night,” says the Tik Tok singer, as if this is the kind of thing every pop star does on stage. “I also have a giant jumping man-sized penis with balls for feet. And I have costume changes and dancers and diamond-shaped spaceship where all my keyboards, drums and theremin are.”
What hidden messages the fans attempt to read into the tour’s symbology remains to be seen. Even a year after unleashing Your Love Is My Drug onto the airwaves, Ke$ha is still answering questions about the seeming throwaway line at the end of the song, where she giggles “I like your beard” for no immediately clear reason. It turns out there’s nothing to read into it. “I love beards,” she says. “I’m not being cryptic in the song. That’s exactly what I mean. If you have a beard, I support you. And I want to touch your beard with my hand or maybe my face. The longer and bushier the better.”

Lapping up the last of Ke$ha-Harris spin

Pop tramp Ke$ha was at it again with DJ Calvin Harris just hours before the pair flew out of Melbourne.
After a bumping and grinding performance at the Future Music Festival on Sunday, the Tik Tok singer was keen to make the most of her last few hours with Harris.
She raced across town from Flemington to The Girls singer’s gig at Prince of Wales Bandroom, St Kilda.
And, jumping straight into Harris’s lap, the two preceded to once again, er, Take It Off.
“Ke$ha and Calvin were all over each other, and I mean, all over each other,” our spy reported.
“It was pretty full on for those watching. Almost embarrassing.”

Ke$ha turns in a bloody shocker at Future Music Festival, drinks blood from a heart

Move over Ozzy Osbourne, there’s a new blood-sucking shock jock in town and her name is Ke$ha.
But unlike the Prince of Darkness, the 24-year-old Californian hasn’t sunk her teeth into a live animal – yet.
While she’s known for her trashy on-stage antics and expletive-laden monologues, the Tik Tok singer still managed to shock punters at Sydney’s Future Music Festival at the weekend when she drank blood from a heart – to the song Cannibal, of course.
The potty-mouthed pop princess held the heart like a goon bag over her mouth, letting the blood ooze across her face and down her chest on the main stage at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
Covered in glitter and draped in a shredded American flag T-shirt, Kesha Rose Sebert performed much of her 45-minute set dripping in blood.
Ke$ha’s publicist did not return calls yesterday, but the pop star is no stranger to Lady Gaga-style shock and awe on-stage antics.
Her high energy live shows, loaded with as much sexual innuendo as her song lyrics, are inspired by pop predecessors Madonna and Britney Spears and feature six-foot penis costumes, revealing rhinestone-coated outfits and lots of glitter.

Ke$ha is about subversion. Her robot trill, trash chic and expletive-loaded live shows aim to disrupt pop culture.
Indeed, initially Ke$ha’s spot on the Future Music Festival, an underground electronica event, was a conundrum.
What place did a mainstream American pop star have beside hipster fare such as Leftfield, Plastikman and Loco Dice?
“I was definitely up for the challenge,” says the 24-year-old singer-songwriter, born Kesha Sibert.
“I know my show is not what a lot of people would expect from someone who is played on pop radio.
“It has electronic and house moments, dirty rock and roll elements and a little pop.
“But I like to keep it irreverent and subversive. That supersedes boundaries.”

Pop femme fatale Ke$ha is still on the lookout for an Aussie husband – but has revised her criteria for the man of her dreams. While she does have a special Australian boy “friend” named Alex, the Future Music Festival performer insists she hasn’t “found The One”.
“The mullet is the new beard for me. I have a special place in my heart for the mullet,” she said at her hotel yesterday before heading to a sold-out concert at the Hordern Pavilion.
Aussie fans continue their love affair with the self-confessed potty-mouthed pop princess, with two singles We R Who We R and Blow in the charts here. Her songwriter mum Pebe and younger brother Louis are travelling with her on the tour to keep her grounded.
“It cuts all the bullshit when you have family around and my mum is just as crazy if not crazier than me. She’s very entertaining – that seems to be the dominant gene in our family,” she said.
